The History of 12 Step

12 Step originally evolved from the principle that only a recovered alcoholic or addict could help another still suffering, to achieve and maintain sobriety. Two alcoholics, sober but struggling to maintain their sobriety, found that by practising the 12 Step principles they were able to stay sober and help others to recover too. Originally, the 12 Step programme was introduced by the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous in 1938 in Akron, Ohio. By carrying the message to others still suffering, helping them to recover, and them then going on to help others, the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous bloomed. It has since become a worldwide phenomenon, with numerous face to face meetings in almost every single country around the world and telephone and video meetings now available online. Since its original implementation, millions of individuals, who would have otherwise died an alcoholic or addicts death, have been saved and transformed.

Over the years, 12 Step has been adapted to successfully treat a vast number of addictions, with new fellowships evolving to treat different addictions, including narcotics, cocaine, gambling, prescription drugs, co-dependency, sex, debt and compulsive spending, love addiction and eating disorders. The 12 Step programme has provided an effective solution to addiction for many individuals. The beauty of 12 Step is that it can be accessed anywhere, no matter what your addiction, there is a solution to the pain and misery of active addiction.

At Oasis Bradford, we provide our patients with the foundations of 12 Step and an understanding of how it works. On leaving our rehab clinic, they have the opportunity to continue this journey and secure their permanent recovery. By continuing to practise 12 Step, they will meet a whole new network of like-minded recovery friends and continue to grow and change for the better. We also offer 12 months free aftercare to all of our patients that complete their treatment programme with us. Aftercare helps our patients to stay recovery focused and on track once they have left the treatment environment. We find that 12 Step works best when combined with other powerful addiction treatment methodologies, aimed at addressing and healing the root causes and issues underpinning each individual’s addiction.

How 12 Step Works?

12 Step works by treating the mind and the spirit of the alcoholic/addict. The process of the steps brings about a profound change in thinking and perception. This shift in thinking is essential to long term, permanent recovery from addiction. It uses the basic principles of open-mindedness, willingness, and honesty; encouraging the individual to work on their defects of character, embrace their assets and to help others. These principles are often very alien to an addict or alcoholic still in active addiction or newly detoxed. Accepting personal responsibility plays a big part in this life-saving programme of change.

Many individuals that suffer from the disease of addiction, have a tendency to blame the world and its people for their own problems. They are unable to see with any clarity, where they have had a part to play in their own consequences. They have very little acceptance over the fact that they cannot control what others say or do and take little if any, responsibility for their own actions.

The principles of the 12 Steps teach the individual that they can only accept responsibility for their own words and actions. This profound realisation alters the way they see others and also themselves; it helps them to pause and process, before reacting or taking a course of action that could cause harm to themselves or to others. By accepting responsibility for their own actions and how they react to others, they are able to make huge changes in their thinking and personal conduct. The 12 Step prffvf is a spiritual programme of action. Essentially, spirituality comes from within and is centred on the individual’s deepest values and meanings. 12 Step assists the individual in connecting to their true authentic self and inner conscience; encouraging a belief in a power greater than themselves, they find peace within and with the world around them. Many make the mistake of thinking it is a religious programme, which it is not; it is open to all beliefs and religions and can also work for those who do not believe in a higher power. A higher power can be as simple as the principles of the programme; which are a willingness, open-mindedness and honesty.
